Ugh, sometimes we have to take the bad with the good here in Madeira and the surrounding beaches.  Storms, wind, and unfortunately red tide is something we beach photographers have to deal with from time to time.  If you don’t know what red tide is, it’s an algae bloom that is toxic to sea animals and occurs periodically at our beaches.  Sometimes it’s worse than others.  If I had to rate tonight’s session from 0-10 (0 being clear and 10 smelling like fish death), I’d rate it a 9.  Dead fish and other creatures unfortunately littered the shore line which made it impossible to shoot by the water.  Not to mention the smell was definitely not a stench one could get used to.  But since this family was vacationing here only for a short while, we made the best of it!

How you ask?  Well, I was able to find some spots closer to the hotel that still were pretty and got some great light!  We also just hung around on the sand and stayed away from the shore.  There’s nothing worse than stepping on a dead fish with your bare feet!  First, because it’s just gross..but secondly because tiny little fish bones do not feel good when they pierce your skin.  We still had a great time though.  We played airplane and flew the kite too.  Being that this family doesn’t get to see the beach often, they still enjoyed their time here in Tampa doing all of the other things it has to offer.  And we still got beautiful images!  And no dead fish!  Hooray for smell-o-vision not being invented yet!

S Family, thank you for continuing to have a positive attitude and making the best of your beach vacay despite the red tide.  This just gives you a reason to plan another vacation next summer!  Enjoy!
